Why does it feel like no matter what I do, the past follows?

  • You feel stuck in the past with no way out.
  • Feeling safe feels hard, even when you know you’re not in danger.
  • Memories, images, or sensations come out of nowhere and leave you fearful, sad, angry, guilty, ashamed, or completely numb.
  • You feel more like you’re surviving than actually living your life.

Trauma therapy at Infinite Horizons Psychotherapy helps you understand how your past shows up today, so you can heal and move forward in a way that feels safe and true to you.

At Infinite Horizons Psychotherapy, we support teens and adults who are navigating:

Generalized anxiety or social anxiety that’s linked to past experiences, criticism, or fear.

Ongoing heaviness, numbness, or loss of interest that may be connected to what you’ve been through.

Navigating the loss of a person or version of yourself, and how that shapes your day-to-day life.

Carrying cultural expectations or intergenerational wounds that affect how “at home” you feel in the world.

Healing from emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, as well as controlling, critical, or unsafe relationship dynamics.

Living with shame, self-blame, or a harsh inner critic shaped by past experiences or trauma.

Difficulties with focus, impulse control, or organization that have been misunderstood, minimized, or judged in the past.

Past events replaying in your mind or body, leaving you unsettled, overwhelmed, or exhausted.

Saying “yes” when you mean “no” or feeling unsafe asserting your needs because of past experiences.

Blaming yourself for what happened, minimizing your experiences, or living with a harsh inner voice that won’t let up.

Avoiding certain people, places, topics, or sensations because they remind you of what you’ve been through, even when it limits your life.

WHY TRAUMA THERAPY?

When trauma is still shaping how you think, feel, and relate, therapy can help you create new patterns that fit who you are now.

Trauma is not only what happened to you, it is also what stayed in your body and your nervous system afterward. It can show up as feeling constantly on edge, shutting down, people pleasing, or having big reactions that don’t always match what is happening in the moment.

What trauma can
look and feel like:

If any of this sounds familiar, trauma therapy in North York can help you move toward a life that is defined by so much more what you survived.

HOW WE SUPPORT YOU THROUGH TRAUMA

1:1 Trauma Therapy Sessions

You will meet one-on-one with a trauma therapist who moves at your pace, helps you slow things down, and supports you in making sense of what feels confusing, frightening, or heavy, without rushing your story.

Psychoeducation

We explore what trauma is, how it affects the brain, body, and nervous system, and why you may feel “on alert” even when you know you are safe. Understanding the “why” behind your reactions can reduce shame and help you see your symptoms as understandable responses, not personal failures.

Trauma-Informed,
Strengths-Based Care

Our trauma therapy is grounded in safety, choice, and empowerment. We honour your story, your identities, and your culture, and we actively look for the strengths and resilience that have helped you survive so far, even if you haven’t always been aware of them.

Evidence-Informed Trauma Modalities

We draw from Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), CBT, IFS, SFBT, and more to help you process trauma, shift beliefs, and reconnect with your sense of self.

Somatic Therapy

We use body-based strategies to help you notice where trauma lives in your body, and to gently release some of that tension. This might include breathwork and simple practices that help you feel more present and less hijacked by triggers.

Assessments & Safety Plans

When needed, we collaborate on gentle assessments and safety plans, so that you feel grounded, informed, and supported as we work through trauma-related symptoms.

Mindfulness

You will learn practical tools to regulate your nervous system, such as noticing early cues of activation, practicing present-moment awareness, and building rituals that help you return to a sense of internal steadiness.

Worksheets, Handouts, & Guided Practices

We may use worksheets, reflections, and guided practices to help you track triggers, responses, and small shifts over time. These tools support you between sessions, so healing is not limited to the therapy room.

Therapy
can be where your story feels understood instead of feared.

Questions About Trauma Therapy

Many people wonder if what they’ve experienced “counts” as trauma. Trauma therapy can help you notice how past experiences (big or small) may still be shaping your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and body responses today. In therapy for trauma, we’ll work together to understand what you’ve been carrying, find language for your experience, and learn ways to process it, work with your emotions, and reconnect with yourself.

In trauma therapy at Infinite Horizons Psychotherapy, we move at a pace that respects your nervous system.

We start by getting to know you: We identify your goals, assess where you’re at today, and create a plan for how to support your healing.

From there, we offer psychoeducation to help you understand what is happening, why it’s happening, and what you might need. We’ll look at how trauma is showing up in your mind, body, and relationships, and make sense of your experiences together.

Over time, we integrate new learnings and tools into what you’re going through in the present, so you can respond differently to triggers, feel more grounded, and move forward with more choice and self-trust.

No. Healing from trauma does not require reliving every moment or sharing every detail. In therapy for trauma, we can focus on how your experiences are affecting you now: your emotions, body sensations, beliefs, and relationships.

We’ll work with what feels manageable and relevant in the present, so you can move toward feeling more grounded, connected, and whole without overwhelming your system.

Yes. With trauma-focused therapy, you can learn to recognize your body’s responses and gently work with your nervous system instead of feeling hijacked by it. We’ll explore grounding skills, regulation strategies, and new ways of responding when you feel triggered.

Over time, many people notice that triggers feel less intense, less frequent, and less in control of their day-to-day life.

You don’t need a perfect or full memory to heal. Our focus is on what’s showing up now (your emotions, body sensations, reactions, and patterns), rather than piecing together every moment from the past.

Healing from trauma is a gradual process, and there’s no one-size-fits-all timeline. It depends on many factors, such as the type of trauma, how long you’ve been carrying it, your current stressors, and your support system.

In general, many people begin to notice small but meaningful shifts, like feeling a bit less on edge, more in control of their emotions, or more aware of their needs, within 8 to 12 sessions (about 2–3 months) of consistent trauma treatment. Deeper healing and integration often happen over a longer period, typically 6 months to a year, especially when working through long-term or complex trauma. Some people choose to continue beyond that for ongoing support, growth, and maintenance.

Your trauma therapist will move at a pace that honours your nervous system and emotional readiness, making sure each step feels as safe and sustainable as possible, rather than rushed.
